Elegant sculpture in Carrara marble depicting Venus (Aphrodite) wearing a light veil, seated on a rock with Cupid (Eros) at her feet, carrying a large bouquet of flowers and surrounded by swallows. This marble group is an allegory of spring, heralded by the presence of swallows. The sculpture is signed Mathurin Moreau. Circa: 1900
Son and pupil of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, Mathurin Moreau won the second Prix de Rome in 1842 and exhibited at the 1848 Salon, where he won numerous awards. His work is abundant, with a predilection for feminine grace, figures and genre scenes, as well as allegories.
Condition report: In good condition with restoration to the wings of a swallow, and to the tips of the love toes.
